Rock / Jazz Band
Instructors: Lindsay Beaver and Mike Archer.
Course Length: 32 weeks, Divided into two 16 week semesters. First semester starts Sept. 25, 2010. Second semester starts Jan. 29, 2011. Rehearsal Length and Day: Every Saturday except Holiday weekends for an hour and a half (90min) sessions. Number of students required:
ROCK BAND
• 1 Drummer
• 1 Bassist
• 2 Guitarists (1 is also fine)
• 1 Vocal
• 1 Piano (may also be substituted for one of the above guitars)
JAZZ BAND
• 1 Drummer
• 1 Bassist
• 1 Guitarist and/or Pianist
• 1-2 Vocals and/or 1-2 Woodwinds and/or Brass
Course Description:
i?]Rock bands will be divided into two sections according to age. Junior ages 8-14 and Senior ages 14 and up. The groups will learn a variety of classic rock recordings ex. Jimi Hendrix, Led Zeppelin, Neil Young and ACDC as well as newer rock groups ex. Nickleback, Smashing Pumpkins, Nirvana and Pearljam. A large part in choosing repertoire also includes the student’s collective tastes.
ii-Jazz bands will divided into the same age groups as the rock bands, however this is subject to demand. Typically the jazz groups will not fill up as much for the younger kids but forhigh
school students in jazz bands at their school or wanting to pursue post-°©?]secondary studies in jazz this may be a fun, as well= as helpful, option. The groups will learn classic jazz standards ex. Bye Bye Blackbird, What is This Thing called Love? All Blues and Summertime.
Learning Objectives:
Rock Band
To learn and memorize all repertoire. Lyrics, Chords, Form etc.
To play as a group. Understanding what each instrument’s main role is in a rock setting and learning to be a cohesive unit.
To learn how to improvise solos and learn rock music vocabulary.
To gain an understanding of a typical rock stage show.Playing the instrument is only half the fun.
To develop social skills and professionalism on and off stage for future career endeavormusically
and otherwise.
To perform live in Winter and Spring ECM recitals
Jazz Band
To learn to read chord charts and lead sheets. (Typically jazz tunes are written and read off of sheet music)
To understand the concept of the “swing” time feel.
To learn to play as a group. Understand what each instrument’s main role is in a jazz setting and learning to be a cohesive unit.
To learn how to improvise a solo and understand jazz music vocabulary.
To learn the history and beginnings of jazz music.
To understand how to accompany a melody instrument.
To perform live in Winter and Spring ECM recitals.
Additional Information:
ECM will provide the following instruments: drums, piano, microphone, PA, and amplifiers. Guitarists, Bassists, and Woodwind players will be required to bring their own instruments.
There may be guest artists and presenters on select weekends, this is at the instructor’s discretion. There will be listening and video sessionas part of band rehearsals.
